The heart of Turin. This large rectangular square is the historical and political hub of the city.
The current layout of this square echoes the design Carlo Emanuele I commissioned from the architect Ascanio Vitozzi towards the end of the 16th century. Palazzo Madama occupies the centre of the square while the Royal Palace, Prefecture, Royal Armoury, Regio Theatre and the arcades with their shops, including two historic cafés Baratti and Mulassano, line the edges. The principal streets of Turin's city centre, via Garibaldi, via Po, via Roma and via Pietro Micca, converge here.
